Back-to-School Germs: What Parents Should Expect

Kids bring home more than just homework. Learn the most common germs kids catch in the first few weeks of school and how to help keep your family healthy.

Back-to-School Germs: What Parents Should Expect

It’s that time again, new backpacks, sharpened pencils, and yes, new germs. As kids head back into classrooms, it’s common for them to bring home more than just homework.

Many kids get sick more often in the first few weeks of school. It’s normal, but it can be frustrating. The good news? Knowing what to expect can help you feel more prepared.

Why do kids get sick more at school?

When kids are together in close spaces, germs spread easily, especially when they’re sharing supplies, high-fiving friends, or sneezing into their sleeves (or not). Young children are still learning how to cover their mouths, wash their hands well, and keep their fingers out of their noses. It’s all part of growing up.

Common illnesses during the school year

Some illnesses are more common once school starts, especially in the fall. These include:

  • The common cold (runny nose, sore throat, mild cough)
  • Stomach bugs (tummy pain, vomiting, or diarrhea)
  • Pink eye (red, itchy, or goopy eyes)
  • Hand, foot, and mouth disease (fever, mouth sores, rash on hands or feet)

Most of these pass on their own with rest and fluids. But they can spread quickly through classrooms, especially in younger grades.

What you can do at home

There’s no way to stop all germs, but you can help your child’s body stay strong and healthy. Here’s how:

  • Make sure they get plenty of sleep each night
  • Offer fruits, veggies, and water during the day
  • Wash hands before meals and after using the bathroom
  • Teach them to cough or sneeze into their elbow, not their hands
  • Keep them home if they have a fever, vomiting, or a bad cough

You can also check with your school to see what their sick policies are. Some schools may require kids to stay home for 24 hours after a fever or tummy bug.

Prepare for sick days

Sometimes, even with your best efforts, your child will still get sick. That’s normal and a sign their immune system is learning how to fight off bugs.

It helps to have a sick-day plan in place, like:

  • Who can stay home if your child needs care
  • Where they’ll rest and what comforts they like (blankets, shows, quiet play)
  • A thermometer and basic supplies ready to go

Don’t forget to let your nanny or caregiver know your plan too, in case they’re with your child during the week.

The start of school comes with excitement and germs. But with healthy habits, rest, and a little extra handwashing, most illnesses are mild and short-lived.
